Tesla released an updated Model Y crossover in China, marking the first major refresh of its bestselling vehicle since its 2019 debut. The revised model, codenamed Juniper, will begin deliveries in Southeast Asian markets in March.

U.S. deliveries are expected this spring as a late 2025 model, though Tesla hasn’t confirmed exact timing.

The exterior updates draw inspiration from the Tesla Cybercab design, featuring a chiseled front end and angular headlights. A thin light bar now runs across the hood’s leading edge, while the rear incorporates a continuous light strip connecting the third brake light with the taillights.

Interior changes mirror those of the recent Model 3 Highland refresh, including:

  • Enhanced cabin noise reduction
  • New ambient lighting system
  • Higher quality materials
  • Heated and ventilated seats
  • Rear passenger touchscreen

Unlike the updated Model 3, which eliminated its steering column stalks, the Chinese-market Model Y retains these controls.

The refresh brings performance improvements to Chinese models. The base rear-wheel drive version now produces 295 hp and accelerates from 0-62 mph in 5.3 seconds — 0.6 seconds faster than before. Its 62.5-kwh battery provides 368 miles of range on the Chinese test cycle, up from 344 miles.

The dual-motor all-wheel drive variant combines a 184-hp front motor with a 260-hp rear motor. It reaches 62 mph in 4.3 seconds — cutting 0.7 seconds from its previous time. Range increases to 446 miles on the Chinese cycle using a 78.4-kwh battery pack.

Current U.S. Model Y versions include single-motor and dual-motor Long Range options, plus a Performance grade. The Performance variant achieves 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds, while the single-motor Long Range delivers an EPA-estimated 337 miles of range.

Tesla’s sales declined in 2024 amid increasing EV competition. As the company’s top-selling model, the Model Y’s refresh comes at a critical time for maintaining market position.

The updated suspension is expected to provide ride quality improvements similar to those seen in the refreshed Model 3, along with better overall build quality.
