Volvo’s electric lineup is getting a shake-up for 2025, with the automaker keeping its compact EX40 crossover while temporarily shelving its sleeker EC40 sibling.
The EX40 — previously known as the XC40 Recharge — maintains most of its specs and pricing for the new model year. Its coupe-styled counterpart won’t return until the 2026 model year, leaving buyers seeking that fastback silhouette to wait a bit longer.
Volvo is streamlining its naming convention across the board. The “Recharge” badge is being retired completely — for both EVs and plug-in hybrids. The new nomenclature is straightforward: EX for SUVs, EC for coupes, and EM for minivans (though currently only the Chinese-market EM90 carries this designation).
The EX40 shares its CMA platform with both the Polestar 2 and the mild-hybrid XC40. Single-motor variants, which switched to rear-wheel drive for 2024, deliver 248 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque, paired with an 82-kwh battery pack good for 296 miles of EPA-rated range.
Opt for the dual-motor setup and you’ll get a significant boost to 402 hp and 494 lb-ft, though the battery capacity drops slightly to 78-kwh. Range takes a modest hit too, settling at 260 miles.
The only technical upgrade for 2025 is a small bump in DC fast-charging capability — from 200 kw to 205 kw.
While Volvo hasn’t confirmed whether 2025 models will come with built-in NACS ports, the company’s existing CCS-equipped vehicles gained Tesla Supercharger access through adapters in late 2023.
Pricing remains largely unchanged. The base single-motor Core trim starts at $53,795 (including $1,295 destination). Plus and Ultra grades command $56,595 and $60,295 respectively. Adding all-wheel drive to any trim level costs $1,750 — a relatively modest premium for the performance upgrade.
The EX40 now sits in the middle of Volvo’s expanding electric range. The flagship EX90 takes the top spot with three rows of luxury, while the new entry-level EX30 — slightly delayed by tariff complications — starts at $46,195 for the dual-motor version. A more affordable single-motor EX30 will join the lineup later this year.
