Volvo’s smallest electric SUV, the EX30, is expanding its lineup. While the powerful Twin Motor Performance version landed at U.S. dealers in January, the Swedish automaker just revealed a more adventurous variant — the EX30 Cross Country.
The Cross Country treatment gives the compact EV some proper off-road credentials. Ground clearance gets a boost, while protective skid plates and rugged 18-inch wheels — which can be fitted with all-terrain rubber — help tackle rougher terrain. For the overlanding crowd, Volvo’s offering optional Cross Country Experience packages that include roof baskets, load carriers, and mud flaps.
Designers kept most of the styling cues from last year’s concept intact. Black body cladding wraps around the wheel arches, while matching trim adorns both bumpers. There’s even a subtle nod to Volvo’s homeland — the front fascia features a topographical pattern inspired by Sweden’s Kebnekaise mountains.
All-wheel drive comes standard on the Cross Country, though Volvo hasn’t confirmed if it’ll match the 422 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque of the current Twin Motor Performance model.
The 69-kWh NMC battery pack from other U.S. EX30s likely carries over. While official EPA range figures are pending, the existing dual-motor variants achieve 253 miles per charge. Fast-charging capabilities should remain impressive — going from 10% to 80% takes less than 30 minutes.
Getting the EX30 to American shores hasn’t been straightforward. Originally planned for summer 2023, new tariffs on Chinese-built EVs forced Volvo to adjust its strategy. The company initially sourced vehicles from China before transitioning production to Belgium. When the EX30 finally reached dealerships in January, only the range-topping dual-motor version was available, starting at $46,195.
The more affordable single-motor EX30 — priced from $36,245 — is still coming. Both it and the Cross Country variant should arrive before 2025 ends, likely as 2026 models.
These additions to the EX30 family show Volvo’s commitment to offering electric vehicles across different price points and use cases. While the Performance version targets urban drivers seeking quick acceleration, the Cross Country aims to attract outdoor enthusiasts who want sustainable adventure.
