BYD announced its Sealion 5 plug-in hybrid will start at £29,995 when it launches February 7.
The mid-size SUV targets rivals like the Kia Sportage, Volkswagen Tiguan, and Nissan Qashqai. The Chinese automaker expects the Sealion 5 to become one of its best-selling models in the UK.
The Sealion 5 DM-i combines a 1.5-liter gas engine with an electric motor for 209 horsepower total output.
Two Battery Options Available
The entry-level Comfort trim features a 12.96kWh battery pack. It delivers 38 miles of electric-only driving and achieves 104.6mpg fuel economy.
Buyers can upgrade to the Design trim for £32,995. This version includes an 18.3kWh battery that extends electric range to 53 miles and improves fuel economy to 134.5mpg.
The larger battery does affect performance slightly – Design models accelerate from 0-62mph in 8.1 seconds compared to 7.7 seconds for the Comfort trim.
Standard Equipment
BYD equips all Sealion 5 models with 18-inch alloy wheels, automatic LED headlights, and a backup camera. The interior uses vegan leather throughout, and both front seats adjust electrically in four directions.
A 12.8-inch touchscreen handles infotainment duties and supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Design trim adds several premium features:
- Electric tailgate
- 360-degree camera system
- Wireless phone charging
- Heated front seats
Paint options include standard Atlantis Blue, while Obsidian Black, Time Grey, and Polar White each cost an extra £850.
The Sealion 5 DM-i becomes BYD’s ninth UK model. It slots above the compact Atto 2 DM-i Super Hybrid but below the larger Seal U DM-i in the lineup.
BYD opened its 125th UK dealership at the end of 2025. The company plans to introduce six additional models this year, including its premium Denza brand.
