ChargePoint is expanding its EV charging network through a new partnership with AAA, giving thousands of auto-related businesses access to discounted charging equipment.
The agreement offers special pricing on ChargePoint’s charging hardware to AAA’s network of towing companies, repair shops, and other automotive businesses. More than 12,000 businesses across 27 U.S. auto clubs and several Canadian CAA locations can take advantage of the program.
Both Level 2 AC chargers and more powerful DC fast-chargers are included in the deal, along with ChargePoint’s service plans. The company’s latest hardware features enhanced security measures — including tamper-resistant cables designed to prevent the copper theft that’s plagued some charging stations.
ChargePoint is rolling out its new Omni Port technology that combines both NACS and CCS connectors in a single unit. This flexibility addresses the shifting connector standards in the EV industry as more automakers adopt Tesla’s NACS format.
The AAA partnership builds on the motor club’s growing EV support services. They’ve been helping electric vehicle drivers since 2010, offering specialized trip planning and mobile charging assistance for members worried about running out of power.
Beyond the AAA collaboration, ChargePoint is working with General Motors to install up to 500 DC fast-charging stations through 2024. These new stations will deliver up to 500 kW charging speeds — significantly more powerful than GM’s existing EVgo partnership chargers, which feature convenient gas-station-style pull-through layouts in metropolitan areas.
The motor club’s involvement signals growing mainstream acceptance of EVs, while addressing infrastructure gaps that have made some drivers hesitant to make the switch from gas vehicles.
