Ford China announced the launch of an all-electric Bronco SUV designed specifically for Chinese buyers. The Ford Bronco New Energy won’t be sold in other markets.
The vehicle represents a collaboration between Ford and Chinese automaker Jiangling Motors Corporation Group (JMGC). Ford China calls it “the most beautiful square box” – marketing language that reflects local preferences for boxy SUV designs.
Power and Performance
The electric Bronco uses a 105kWh battery pack manufactured by BYD, China’s leading EV battery supplier.
Range hits 404 miles on China’s CLTC testing cycle. The SUV supports ultra-fast charging, though Ford hasn’t specified exact charging speeds.
Power output reaches 271 horsepower. The powertrain focuses on city driving rather than high-speed performance. Unlike most SUVs in this size category, the electric Bronco uses front-wheel drive only.
Size and Construction
The Bronco New Energy measures just over five meters long and nearly two meters wide. That makes it 250mm longer than a Land Rover Defender but slightly narrower.
Construction uses unibody design instead of the ladder frame found on the American Bronco. This car-like structure matches the approach taken by Land Rover’s Defender.
The design stays true to Bronco DNA but adapts to Chinese tastes. It’s more angular than its US counterpart and features redesigned headlights and grille. A slim secondary grille sits below the hood line.
Interior and Technology
Ford China hasn’t released interior photos yet. The company promises a “smart cockpit” with multiple scene modes for naps, pets, and overnight camping.
Expect extensive screen integration – Chinese buyers typically demand more digital displays than Western markets. The SUV includes over 30 sensors and cameras for driver assistance features.
Range Extender Option
Ford will also offer a plug-in hybrid version with 241 horsepower.
The range extender model uses a smaller 43kWh battery paired with a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine. Electric-only range drops to 143 miles, but total range reaches 758 miles with the gasoline engine.
This dual approach reflects Chinese market preferences – pure EVs for urban buyers and range extenders for those concerned about charging infrastructure outside major cities.
