Arnold Clark opened its charging network to all electric vehicle drivers, expanding access beyond the exclusive app-only service that launched last year.
The UK’s largest independently-owned car retail chain invested £30 million in the Arnold Clark Charge network. Previously, drivers needed to book charging sessions through the company’s app at dealer locations.
Any EV owner can now pull up and charge without advance booking.
More than 240 ultra-rapid chargers operate at over 50 Arnold Clark dealerships across the UK. Each location features up to eight charging devices delivering 150kW power output.
The network charges a flat rate of 55p per kilowatt-hour – making it one of the cheapest ultra-rapid charging services available nationally.
Payment and Access Options
Drivers can pay through contactless card payments, the Arnold Clark app, or roaming services. Compatible payment platforms include Allstar, Zap-Pay, Octopus Electroverse and Plugsurfing.
The charging bays split access between walk-up customers and app users who pre-book time slots. Most locations remain accessible around the clock.
App users can still reserve specific charging times and locations in advance.
“We’re committed to investing in the future of the automotive industry and making electric vehicle charging accessible to everyone,” said Russell Borrie, Arnold Clark’s chief executive officer.
Borrie emphasized the need for charging infrastructure to match growing EV adoption rates.
“With electric vehicles becoming increasingly popular, it’s essential that our charging infrastructure keeps pace with rising demand.”
Expansion Plans
Arnold Clark plans to double its charging network capacity over the coming years. The company targets 500 charging devices across 100 dealership locations.
Additional sites will come online before the end of 2025, according to company officials.
The network expansion supports the UK’s broader public charging infrastructure development as electric vehicle sales continue growing nationwide.
