Audi confirmed plans to revive the A2 nameplate with a new compact electric vehicle launching in autumn 2026.

The A2 e-tron will serve as the entry point into Audi’s electric lineup, which currently includes the Q6 SUVs and A6 saloon models. The new EV is expected to replace the discontinued A1 and Q2 in Audi’s compact car segment.

Meeting Urban Demand

Audi says the A2 e-tron will “open up access to premium electric mobility” – targeting growing demand for upscale compact EVs in major European cities.

CEO Gernot Döllner emphasized customer feedback drove the decision.

We’ve listened. Our customers want electric mobility that impresses in everyday life. The A2 e-tron is our promise to deliver exactly that – efficient, compact, and confident. We’re making entry into the electric Audi world easier and more relevant than ever.

The nameplate deliberately references Audi’s innovative compact hatchback from the early 2000s. That original A2 stood out for its radical material use, weight-saving techniques, and boxy design focused on efficiency.

Design sketches and spy photos suggest the new A2 e-tron will adopt similar proportions – featuring an upright front end and tall rear section.

Platform and Performance

Technical specifications remain unconfirmed, but the A2 e-tron will likely use Volkswagen Group’s updated MEB platform. This architecture currently supports the VW ID.3 and Cupra Born, plus the smaller ID Polo and Cupra Raval.

Audi hasn’t clarified whether their model will align with the B-segment hatches or larger ID.3-sized vehicles.

Depending on the platform variant, the A2 e-tron could offer:

  • Battery capacity: 37kWh to 79kWh
  • Motor output: up to 322 horsepower

Production will begin at Audi’s Ingolstadt factory in early 2027.

Döllner highlighted the model’s importance beyond sales figures.

The A2 e-tron is crucial for our brand and also for our German home. With the production of an additional fully electric model family in Ingolstadt, we are securing jobs and delivering electric mobility made in Germany.

The launch positions Audi to compete in the premium compact EV segment while maintaining production at its historic German facility.
