The Audi Q6 E-Tron is branching into unexplored territory — the German automaker has revealed a rugged off-road concept that transforms its electric crossover into something more adventurous.

Photos shared by Audi on social media showcase the Q6 E-Tron Off-Road concept, which features an impressive engineering solution to tackle rough terrain. The concept uses portal axles, a specialized setup that positions wheel hubs below the axle center using a gear system.

This isn’t just about looking tough. Portal axles serve multiple purposes — they boost ground clearance, enable wider stance for better stability, and provide additional gearing options beyond the standard differential. It’s a serious piece of off-road engineering that’s rarely seen in electric vehicles.

Mercedes-Benz explored similar territory with its EQC 4×4² concept.

The Q6 E-Tron Off-Road builds on Audi’s previous exploration of adventure-ready EVs, following last year’s Activesphere concept. Both vehicles share the company’s Premium Platform Electric (PPE) architecture — the same platform underpinning the standard Q6 E-Tron, A6 E-Tron sedan, and electric Porsche Macan.

While the concept is based on the sleeker Sportback variant, U.S. buyers can currently only order the standard SUV body style. The 2025 Q6 E-Tron starts at $65,095 (including $1,295 destination) and delivers an EPA-rated range of 321 miles — a figure that’s proven achievable in real-world testing across California’s varied terrain.

Audi hasn’t confirmed whether this off-road concept signals future production plans, but it demonstrates the company’s interest in expanding its electric lineup beyond traditional luxury segments. The timing is interesting, as several automakers are exploring more capable electric SUVs and trucks, suggesting growing market interest in adventure-ready EVs.
