Audi Reveals All-Electric E-Tron Sports Car for Brand Reboot image

Audi CEO Gernot Döllner confirmed the German automaker will unveil an all-electric sports car concept this September, ahead of the 2025 Munich motor show. According to Bild, Döllner acknowledged Audi’s struggles during its transition to electric vehicles.

The brand has faced quality drops, confusing model names, and overly complex technology programs.

Döllner described the new sports car as “highly emotional” and positioned “something in between” the discontinued TT and R8 models. The vehicle will join Audi’s e-tron electric sub-brand.

A Return to Form

The CEO called the project Audi’s “TT Moment 2.0” – referencing the original TT’s impact when it launched in 1998.

That car transformed Audi from a utilitarian brand into a stylish performance manufacturer. The original TT’s design language influenced the entire Audi lineup for years.

“I don’t want to beat around the bush; we have to get back on track.”

Döllner provided limited details about the e-tron sports car but confirmed “the car will be built.” Production will start within two years of the Munich debut in October 2025.

The concept will showcase new interior design, technical features, and styling direction from recently-appointed design chief Massimo Frascella.

Platform Sharing Expected

Industry speculation suggests the e-tron sports car could share its platform with the upcoming Porsche 718 EV. Both brands operate under the Volkswagen Group umbrella.

If this strategy moves forward, Audi would likely use different tuning and power output compared to the Porsche version. This approach would reduce development costs while maintaining brand distinction.

The powertrain sharing wouldn’t be unprecedented – Audi and Porsche already collaborate on the Premium Platform Electric architecture used in the e-tron GT and Taycan.

Broader Electric Strategy

Audi isn’t slowing its electrification plans despite recent challenges.

Next year, the company will introduce an A3-sized electric model likely based on Volkswagen Group’s MEB platform. The same underpinnings support the VW ID.3 and Cupra Born.

The sports car concept represents Audi’s attempt to recapture its design leadership from the late 1990s through mid-2010s. During that period, models like the original TT, first-generation R8, and updated A4 established Audi as a design benchmark.

Whether the September concept can generate similar excitement remains to be seen. The Munich motor show will provide the first public glimpse of Audi’s electric sports car direction.
