Be.EV announced it’s offering EV drivers charging rates of just 1p per kWh this Saturday to celebrate the opening of its newest charging hub in Manchester. According to the company, drivers can fully charge their vehicles for less than £1 at the promotional event.
The new Manchester Charging Oasis opened in Failsworth on the site of an abandoned petrol station. It’s one of the first projects in the UK to convert a former fuel station into an EV charging hub.
The £4 million facility sits on the corner of Reliance Street and Oldham Road. The site had been unused for 15 years before Be.EV acquired it.
Major Redevelopment Required
The conversion required extensive decontamination and redevelopment work. Be.EV transformed the abandoned site into a modern charging destination with green features.
The hub features 12 ultra-rapid charging bays with speeds up to 300kW. Two extra-long bays accommodate larger vehicles, and there’s an accessible bay plus four waiting areas.
Local primary school student Srinika Malladi designed artwork that now wraps one of the charging units.
Sustainable Design Elements
Be.EV incorporated several environmental features into the site design. A wildflower garden and trees were planted to attract wildlife and boost biodiversity.
The company used recycled materials throughout construction:
- Top layer tarmac made from recycled tires
- Recycled bricks in the Caffè Nero Express construction
- Solar panels providing on-site energy
- Recycled drainage water for site use
Asif Ghafoor, CEO of Be.EV, said the site represents a new standard for public charging.
“This flagship site has been a long time in the making, and we’re thrilled that it’s open to the public. It’s taken a lot of hard work to get to this point and is a proud day for everyone in the business.”
Ghafoor emphasized the site’s focus on driver experience. He said it’s designed to provide amenities and natural surroundings that make charging more enjoyable.
Competitive Pricing Strategy
After Saturday’s promotional event, the site will operate at 50p per kWh. Be.EV claims this makes it the cheapest ultra-rapid charging location in Manchester.
The pricing strategy reflects the company’s commitment to affordable public charging. Ghafoor said Be.EV wants to provide reliable, cost-effective charging options for the community.
The Saturday opening event runs from morning through evening, giving drivers across Manchester their chance to experience the new facility at the promotional rate.
