BMW has revealed the 2026 BMW i3, bringing electric power to the 3 Series for the first time with Europe’s longest EV range on a single charge.

The electric saloon delivers 559 miles of range using BMW’s new EV-only platform and represents the second model in the company’s ‘Neue Klasse’ lineup. The i3 follows the second-generation iX3 in using BMW’s 800V Gen6 architecture designed specifically for electric vehicles.

BMW borrowed the name from its discontinued i3 hatchback, which ended production in late 2022.

The timing gives BMW a market advantage over Mercedes and Audi in the compact executive EV segment. Mercedes plans to launch its electric C-Class equivalent in the coming months, while Audi’s A4 e-tron remains further out.

Initial availability focuses on the all-wheel-drive 50 XDrive variant. BMW plans additional trim levels later, including a quad-motor M3 version producing 1,000bhp.

Battery and Performance

The 108kWh battery pack uses nickel-manganese cobalt chemistry and enables the impressive range figure. BMW’s Gen6 platform mounts seats directly to the battery, creating a lower roofline that improves aerodynamics.

Engineers sealed the floor completely to enhance airflow underneath the vehicle.

DC fast charging reaches 400kW maximum, adding 249 miles of range in 10 minutes. AC charging tops out at 22kW for home and workplace charging.

The i3 weighs 2.3 tonnes and measures 4.7 metres in length. Its powertrain combines a 322bhp electrically excited rear motor with a 165bhp front motor for 463bhp total output and 476lb ft of torque.

BMW hasn’t released acceleration figures yet but expects the i3 to reach 62mph in approximately 4.0 seconds.

The platform delivers 50:50 weight distribution, maintaining BMW’s driving characteristics in electric form.

Design and Technology

BMW developed new styling language for the electric 3 Series that merges slim headlights with the kidney grilles into a single element. The design emphasizes the car’s 1.87-metre width through illuminated outline elements across the front end.

Traditional 3 Series proportions remain, including the long body and rear overhangs that define the model’s silhouette.

The interior mirrors the iX3’s layout with a 17.9-inch central touchscreen running BMW’s latest iDrive software. Most vehicle controls operate through this display rather than physical buttons.

A 43.3-inch ‘Panoramic iDrive’ display spans the dashboard width, showing speed and battery charge levels. This eliminates the traditional instrument cluster behind the steering wheel.

The four-spoke steering wheel introduces haptic controls for the first time in BMW’s lineup.

Production begins at BMW’s Munich factory with pricing around £47,185 – matching the current hybrid 3 Series cost.

The 2026 BMW i3 arrives as a saloon first, with a Touring estate variant planned for later release.
