BYD claimed the top spot among electric vehicle brands in the UK for 2026, with 12,754 cars sold since January.
The Chinese automaker achieved this milestone despite entering the UK market just three years ago in early 2023. BYD’s sales figures put it ahead of Tesla, Kia, BMW and Volkswagen in the electric vehicle segment.
When combined with its plug-in hybrid sales, BYD moved 26,396 total vehicles – capturing a 9.5% market share.
BYD’s plug-in hybrid lineup uses DM-i technology, which stands for Dual Mode Intelligent. These models include the Sealion 5, Seal U, Seal 6, and Seal 6 Touring.
The company’s battery-electric range covers multiple segments. The Atto 2, Atto 3 Evo, Dolphin Surf, Dolphin, Seal, and Sealion 7 make up BYD’s electric-only offerings.
Private Buyers Drive Success
BYD became the leading EV brand among private buyers – even without qualifying for the UK Government’s Electric Car Grant scheme.
The UK’s electric vehicle market grew 22% year-over-year. However, the Renault 5 topped individual model registrations as the most popular electric car nationwide.
BYD plans to deploy a network of 1,000kW ‘Flash’ chargers across the UK later this year. The company’s also developing home and utility-scale battery storage systems similar to Tesla’s Powerwall.
“At BYD, we are committed to delivering outstanding value through high-tech electric vehicles that combine innovation, quality and affordability. But our ambition goes beyond building great cars. We are also bringing advanced technologies that unlock the full value of electrification, including Vehicle-to-Grid solutions that can help customers optimise energy use and reduce costs.”
Bono Ge, BYD UK country manager, highlighted the company’s broader energy ambitions.
“In parallel, BYD has been deploying home and utility-scale energy storage solutions to support a more efficient and affordable energy ecosystem,” Ge added.
European Expansion Continues
BYD secured 1.8% of Europe’s EV market during the first two months of 2026.
However, the company faces challenges beyond sales figures. BYD’s Hungarian factory in Szeged is under investigation following allegations of labor malpractice.
A watchdog investigation is examining working conditions at the facility.
