BYD is extending its battery warranty coverage to 155,000 miles across all European markets – a significant boost from the previous 93,200-mile limit.
The Chinese automaker, which recently overtook Tesla as the world’s largest EV manufacturer, announced the changes take effect immediately for both new and existing customers.
The extended warranty covers all BYD EVs and plug-in hybrids sold in Europe, including the UK. BYD guarantees its high-voltage drive batteries will maintain at least 70% state of health throughout the entire warranty period.
Industry-Leading Coverage
The warranty period remains eight years, but the mileage increase puts BYD ahead of most competitors.
Tesla currently offers eight-year, 110,000-mile coverage across its model lineup. Toyota leads the industry with a 10-year, one-million-mile warranty that guarantees batteries to 90% state of health. Most other manufacturers stick to the legally required minimum of 100,000 miles over eight years.
BYD’s new terms automatically apply to existing owners – not just future buyers.
The only exception is the ETP3 commercial van, which isn’t sold in the UK market.
Blade Battery Technology
BYD says its blade battery technology has proven capable of more than 3,000 charge and discharge cycles during testing.
The company claims this translates to a service life equivalent to over 745,500 miles – nearly five times the new warranty coverage.
The warranty extension reflects BYD’s confidence in its lithium iron phosphate battery chemistry, which prioritizes safety and longevity over maximum energy density.
For EV buyers concerned about long-term battery performance, the extended coverage addresses one of the biggest ownership worries. Battery replacement costs can run into tens of thousands of pounds, making warranty terms a key consideration for many buyers.
The move comes as BYD continues expanding its European presence, with the company positioning itself as a premium alternative to established brands through competitive pricing and comprehensive coverage.
