BYD’s manufacturing plant in Xi’an, China produced its one millionth Dolphin Surf on June 30 – just 27 months after the compact electric car first launched globally.

The milestone makes the Dolphin Surf the fastest-selling car in its segment, according to BYD officials. The supermini has topped monthly sales charts in its class more than 20 times since launching.

Stella Li, BYD’s executive vice president, said the achievement reflects the model’s global appeal.

“The Dolphin Surf has set benchmarks and records ever since it was introduced, topping the monthly sales charts in its class more than 20 times in just over two years. We’re thrilled that a million examples are now on the roads around the world.”

The Dolphin Surf arrived in UK showrooms last month, though it’s been available worldwide under different names. In China, BYD calls it the Seagull. Latin American markets know it as the Dolphin Mini.

At just under 4 meters long, the Dolphin Surf competes in the A-segment against models like the Renault 5, Citroen E-C3, and Dacia Spring. UK pricing starts at £18,605 and runs to £24,000.

Three trim levels offer different powertrain configurations:

  • Active (£18,605) – 30kWh battery, 137-mile range, 87bhp motor
  • Boost – 43.2kWh battery, 200-mile range, same 87bhp motor
  • Comfort – 43.2kWh battery, 193-mile range, upgraded 154bhp motor

The entry-level Active model positions itself directly against the Dacia Spring and Leapmotor T03 – both budget-focused options in the growing small EV segment.

BYD’s European expansion continues with the Dolphin Surf launch. The Chinese automaker has introduced five models across Europe in two years, including the Atto 3, Seal, Seal U, and Sealion 7.

The company plans to establish European research and development facilities alongside a manufacturing plant. BYD will also open regional headquarters in Hungary as part of its expansion strategy.

The one million production milestone comes as European automakers scramble to offer affordable electric cars. Small EVs represent one of the fastest-growing segments as manufacturers try to meet stricter emissions regulations while keeping prices accessible.
