BYD has confirmed its Shark 6 plug-in hybrid pickup will make its UK debut at the 2026 Goodwood Festival of Speed, according to BYD officials.

The Shark 6 will be joined by the Dolphin G DM-i supermini at next month’s FoS event. Models from BYD’s luxury brands Denza and Yangwang will also launch as part of the Chinese automaker’s multi-vehicle showcase.

Pricing and Competition

The BYD Shark 6 faces direct competition from the Ford Ranger PHEV, priced from £40,830 without VAT, and the new all-electric Toyota Hilux starting at £42,170 excluding VAT.

Pricing is expected to fall within this range based on market positioning.

Powertrain and Performance

Available exclusively as a twin-cab configuration, the Shark 6 uses BYD’s plug-in hybrid DMO powertrain. The ‘Dual Mode Off-Road’ system delivers 435bhp combined output through an internal combustion engine paired with dual electric motors and a 29.58kWh Blade battery pack.

This setup provides 55 miles of electric-only range – more than double the Ford Ranger’s 27-mile EV capability, though the Ford produces 275bhp total.

The BYD falls short in hauling capacity. The Shark 6 can tow 2,500kg and carry 790kg payload in its bed, while the Ford handles 3,500kg towing and the standard one-tonne payload.

Global Launch Strategy

The Shark 6 made its international debut in Mexico on May 14, 2024 – the first BYD model launched outside China. Despite manufacturing at BYD’s facility in Zhengzhou, the pickup isn’t sold in the Chinese domestic market.

Currently available across Latin America, South America, South Africa, Asia, and Oceania, the model has found particular success in Australia.

The Australian market has embraced the Shark 6 as a bestseller. Last year, various media outlets named it both Ute of the Year and Car of the Year. A Shark 6 also became the 100,000th BYD vehicle sold in Australia – marking a milestone for the company’s expansion efforts.

The UK introduction represents BYD’s continued push into European markets with its hybrid pickup technology.
