Chrysler Halts Electric SUV Development

Chrysler’s first electric vehicle plans have hit a roadblock. The automaker’s parent company, Stellantis, is pausing development of an electric SUV that would’ve marked Chrysler’s entry into the EV market.

Mopar Insiders first reported the suspension, citing an email to suppliers that called for an immediate halt to all program-related spending. A Stellantis spokesperson later confirmed to Green Car Reports that the project “is paused for now” while the company reassesses market conditions and customer preferences.

The electric SUV was originally previewed by the Airflow concept in 2022. However, enthusiasm for the project began fading by 2023, when Chrysler CEO Christine Feuell pushed for a complete redesign — dropping both the concept’s styling and its historic Airflow nameplate.

This leaves Chrysler with just one vehicle in its lineup heading into its centennial year in 2025: the Pacifica/Voyager minivan.

The brand isn’t abandoning its electric ambitions entirely. A refreshed Pacifica arrives in 2026, followed by a new crossover SUV and a third model based on the recently unveiled Halcyon concept — a sleek electric four-door coupe that’s likely to appeal to a more niche market than the canceled SUV.

Chrysler is also developing an all-electric version of the Pacifica minivan. Feuell confirmed in November at the LA Auto Show that this new model will retain the Pacifica name when it launches sometime after the 2026 refresh of the current model.

The decision comes as automakers across the industry are adjusting their EV strategies amid shifting market conditions and consumer demand. The current Pacifica remains available with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, making it the brand’s sole electrified offering for the immediate future.
