Energy supplier EDF announced it’s extending the off-peak charging window for electric vehicle drivers starting April 1st.
The company will add two extra hours of discounted electricity to its EV tariffs. Customers can now charge between 11pm and 6am – up from the previous midnight to 5am window.
Seven Hours of Cut-Price Charging
The extended timeframe means EV owners can add enough energy each night to drive 140 to 210 miles for just 8.5p per kWh.
EDF’s EV tariff customers on GoElectric, Pod Point Plug & Power, and Pod Point EV Exclusive plans will automatically receive the extension.
Both new and existing customers qualify for the updated rates.
Joe Souto, director of retail at EDF, said the change makes charging simpler and more affordable.
“With seven hours of overnight charging, households can help reduce the strain on the grid by using electricity when it’s less in demand, and wake up with a car fully charged easing the pressure of the morning routine.”
Significant Cost Savings
The dedicated off-peak rates allow EV drivers to run their vehicles for approximately 2p per mile.
That’s a dramatic difference from petrol costs. With fuel prices near record levels, conventional cars cost around 17p per mile to operate.
Souto emphasized the environmental benefits alongside the savings. He noted that customers using off-peak electricity can reduce their carbon footprint while supporting Britain’s transition to sustainable energy.
The timing also helps balance grid demand by encouraging electricity use during lower-demand overnight hours.
