London Utility Companies Test Electric Excavators to Cut Emissions, Noise
UK Power Networks and Falco Construction are testing electric mini-excavators in London that eliminate CO2 emissions and reduce noise pollution by 75% compared to diesel models.
The Takeuchi TB20e fully electric excavators are working on underground cable maintenance across the capital, where they help maintain power supply to nearly nine million residents.
These e-diggers produce zero CO2e, NOX and particulate (PM.25) emissions. They operate at 13 fewer decibels than traditional excavators — a crucial benefit in London’s dense urban areas.
“The Takeuchi model is the first electric mini-excavator we have seen that performs comparably with more traditionally-powered diggers,” said Alan Seyfi, support services director at Falco Construction.
Falco plans to replace its 120 diesel excavators with TB20e models. This switch would eliminate more than 200 tonnes of CO2e emissions annually.
Katherine Jennings, continuous improvement manager at UK Power Networks, emphasized the trial’s importance: “We are incredibly proud of this trial and excited about the initial positive findings, as e-diggers ultimately could be a huge enabler in UK Power Networks and Falco achieving their joint Net Zero commitments.”
The initiative supports UK Power Networks’ broader strategy to prepare its infrastructure for increased adoption of electric vehicles and heat pumps.
The Greater London Authority has endorsed the trial’s success. London’s deputy mayor for environment and energy, Mete Coban, said: “We know that construction vehicles such as diggers contribute significantly to air pollution, which is why the Mayor has tightened standards across London. It’s great to see companies like UK Power Networks and Falco Construction leading the way and rolling out electric diggers.”
The program aims to create cleaner construction practices, particularly benefiting residents in London’s most affected areas.
Both companies are working toward Net Zero targets through this and other sustainability initiatives.
“We are passionate about partnering with our suppliers to drive continuous improvement in the sustainability sphere. This is critical, as meaningful change and a just transition can only come about through shared goals and joint initiatives,” Jennings added.
