Electric Hot Hatch Images & Specs Revealed

Electric Hot Hatch Images & Specs Revealed image

Volkswagen has unveiled its first-ever electric GTI, the ID. Polo GTI, marking exactly 50 years since the original Golf GTI created the hot hatch segment.

The new electric performance car promises more than 220 horsepower from a front-mounted motor and a 0-62mph time under seven seconds. It’s designed to compete directly with the Alpine A290, Peugeot E-208 GTI and Vauxhall Corsa GSE when it launches in October 2026.

VW says the ID. Polo GTI stays true to the Golf’s original mission while embracing electric power.

Design brings classic GTI cues to electric platform

The ID. Polo GTI uses VW’s Pure Positive design language but keeps clear connections to previous Polo generations and classic GTI models. The company achieved this through simple lines and the long wheelbase that the electric platform allows.

Sitting on 19-inch alloy wheels with short overhangs and crisp body lines, it maintains traditional hot hatch proportions. Modern touches include illuminated VW badges and LED lighting elements throughout.

The famous GTI red strip wraps beneath the full-width front light bar and features a 3D GTI logo in Tornado Red. Two red towing eye-style elements sit in the honeycomb lower grille, while a front splitter and GTI-specific bumper complete the aggressive look.

Black side skirts carry the red GTI badge and flow into a chunky rear diffuser design.

The upright tailgate features a full-width light bar with 3D-effect tail lights and a GTI-specific two-section roof spoiler. Inside, red trim appears on the dashboard, door tops get red stitching, and the sports steering wheel features a red motorsport-style center line.

The sports seats use tartan microfleece as a tribute to the Mk1 Golf GTI. Stitch-in tags on the shoulders read “Original GTI since 1976.”

Even the digital displays pay homage to the original. A “retro” display mode replaces modern instruments with late Mk1 Golf-style dials and adds ’80s-style graphics to the infotainment screen.

That infotainment system is a 12.9-inch unit running Android-powered software. After criticism of early ID cars, VW moved heating controls back to physical “easy-grip” buttons on the center console.

VW calls the ID. Polo GTI a “space miracle” – it offers improved passenger and luggage space over the current petrol model despite nearly identical dimensions. The 441-liter boot is 25% bigger than the outgoing petrol version.

Performance setup targets proper GTI feel

The ID. Polo GTI uses the VW Group’s MEB+ platform that also underpins the Cupra Raval. It shares the same setup as the range-topping Raval VZ.

The front-mounted motor produces 223 horsepower and 214 lb-ft of torque. That delivers 0-62mph acceleration in 6.8 seconds and a top speed of 109mph.

A 52kWh battery provides a claimed 263 miles of range. 105kW charging should deliver 10-80% charge in 24 minutes thanks to what VW calls a “particularly constant” charging curve.

The Polo GTI gets bespoke tuning for its MacPherson strut front suspension and torsion beam rear setup. GTI-specific steering hardware, anti-roll bars, and performance-focused throttle and braking systems complete the package.

Every ID. Polo GTI includes VW’s 15-stage adaptive damping system called Dynamic Chassis Control, plus an electronic differential lock.

A GTI mode activated via a large steering wheel button sets everything to its most aggressive level. This enables launch control and activates synthetic sound plus red interior lighting for the full performance experience.

Pricing details still under wraps

VW hasn’t announced pricing for the ID. Polo GTI yet, with pre-orders not opening until October.

The related Cupra Raval starts just over £35,000, so the GTI will likely occupy similar territory. That would put it on par with competitors like the Alpine A290.

Standard equipment includes 19-inch alloys, twin-screen digital cockpit, adaptive damping and the latest driver assistance systems.

Options will include a 10-speaker Harman Kardon stereo, panoramic sunroof, massage seats and a towball mount for rear bike racks.
