Electric Saab 9-3 Goes on Sale as Brand’s Final Cars Sent to Auction image

National Electric Vehicle Sweden is auctioning off three electric concept cars from the defunct Saab brand, including a rare 9-3 EV that represents one of the final attempts to revive the Swedish marque.

The electric Saab 9-3 heading to auction was developed by NEVS after the original company collapsed in 2012. NEVS revealed the concept in 2014, promising it would launch a new era for the brand.

Only twelve test vehicles ever made the journey from NEVS’ Chinese factory to Saab’s original Trollhättan facility for evaluation.

The project never reached production. When NEVS effectively collapsed in 2023, these prototype vehicles became some of the last remnants of Saab’s electric future.

Swedish auction site Klaravik is handling the sale of eight vehicles total, including three electric concepts.

Advanced EV Prototypes

The second electric vehicle uses an all-wheel-drive system developed with Protean. This 9-3-based prototype features four in-wheel motors – technology that was being explored for the planned Emily GT.

NEVS designed the Emily GT as a luxury grand tourer with more than 480 horsepower and over 600 miles of range.

Canadian startup EV Electra showed interest in salvaging the Emily GT project, but negotiations fell through in May 2024.

The third electrified concept is a range-extender hybrid, demonstrating that NEVS’ engineers were testing multiple powertrain strategies beyond pure battery power.

All three vehicles use the final generation Saab 9-3 platform as their foundation.

Auction Details

Bidding opens on May 21st. The auction concludes with a special event at the Trollhättan factory on May 30th.

Three conventional Saab 9-3 Aero models will also be sold. These represent some of the very last mass-produced Saab vehicles ever manufactured.

The auction marks the end of nearly two decades of attempts to restart Saab production after General Motors sold the brand in 2010.

NEVS purchased Saab’s assets in 2012 but struggled with funding and regulatory approvals throughout its ownership period. The company’s focus shifted toward ride-sharing services and autonomous vehicle development before its recent collapse.
