Volkswagen revealed the first preview image of its upcoming electric Golf, showing employees a silhouetted design of the Mk9 generation during a meeting at the company’s Wolfsburg factory this week.
German trade union IG Metall shared the image during discussions at the facility, where the electric Golf will be manufactured when it launches in 2028.
The silhouette shows several design changes from the current Mk8.5 Golf. The electric version features a larger roof spoiler and more angular front and rear styling.
The wheel arches appear more flared than the current model.
Design draws from VW’s past
The front end resembles VW’s ID. Every1 concept car, which borrowed styling elements from classic models like the Golf Mk4 and Scirocco. Andreas Mindt, Volkswagen’s design chief, reportedly used the Golf Mk7 and 7.5 generations as inspiration for the Mk9’s design.
Volkswagen is pushing forward with an electric vehicle strategy after a rocky start to its electrification efforts. The company plans to release several new EVs, beginning with the ID. Polo and ID. Polo Cross this year.
A production version of the ID. Every1 city car is expected in 2027 and will likely carry the ID. Lupo name.
Physical controls return
The automaker will bring back physical buttons in new interiors, starting with the ID. Polo. The electric Golf is expected to follow this approach and will wear the ID. Golf badge.
The Mk9 will use Volkswagen’s new 800V SSP architecture, which supports advanced battery technology, longer range, and faster charging speeds.
SSP platforms run on software developed with US EV manufacturer Rivian. This partnership enables over-the-air updates – owners can upgrade their vehicles without visiting a service center.
The Golf Mk9 won’t be electric-only. Volkswagen plans to offer internal combustion and hybrid versions alongside the electric model.
