Kia unveiled the first images and specifications for the European version of its EV5 electric SUV, marking a significant expansion of the brand’s electric lineup.
The EV5 will launch in late 2025 as an all-electric alternative to Kia’s popular Sportage family SUV. It’s positioned to compete directly with the Ford Explorer, Skoda Enyaq, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Tesla Model Y in the crowded mid-size electric SUV segment.
While versions of the EV5 have been available in China, Thailand, Australia and New Zealand since 2023, the European model differs substantially in design, battery technology and manufacturing location.
Technical Specifications and Performance
The EV5 uses Kia’s proven E-GMP platform – the same foundation that underpins the EV3 and upcoming EV4 hatchback. This shared architecture allows Kia to leverage existing technology while reducing development costs.
A 214bhp front-mounted motor powers all European EV5 variants, drawing energy from an 81.4kWh battery pack. The European model exclusively uses nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery chemistry, unlike its international counterparts that offer a smaller 64.2kWh LFP option.
The most efficient EV5 configuration delivers up to 329 miles of range on a single charge.
Kia’s 400V charging architecture supports up to 120kW DC fast charging, enabling 10-80% battery replenishment in approximately 30 minutes. This charging speed matches other current Kia electric vehicles but falls short of some newer 800V systems offering faster charging rates.
The European launch lineup won’t include the 308bhp all-wheel-drive variant available in other markets, though Kia hasn’t ruled out adding this option later.
Design and Exterior Features
The European EV5 maintains the same exterior design as models sold elsewhere. Its styling follows Kia’s established electric SUV language – featuring a boxy body, upright front end with signature ‘starmap’ LED lighting, and subtle boattail rear profile.
The EV5 slots between the smaller EV3 and larger EV9 in Kia’s electric SUV range.
Air trim models come standard with 18-inch alloy wheels, while GT-Line and GT-Line S variants offer 19-inch or 20-inch wheel options plus more aggressive body styling elements.
Interior Layout and Storage
The European EV5’s interior represents a notable departure from international versions. Kia eliminated the front bench seat configuration sold in other markets, replacing it with a substantial center console similar to the EV9.
This console houses a wireless phone charger, fingerprint sensor, cupholders and dual-level storage compartments totaling 16.5 liters of capacity.
Storage capabilities include a 566-liter boot and 44-liter front trunk. The rear seats fold completely flat, creating a two-meter-long cargo area for larger items.
The dashboard retains physical controls for essential heating functions alongside Kia’s three-screen setup – 12.3-inch displays for infotainment and instrument cluster, plus a 5.3-inch touchscreen dedicated to climate controls.
Technology and Sustainability Features
Kia’s recently introduced entertainment package enables streaming from Disney+, Netflix and other services. Vehicle-to-load technology allows the EV5 to power external devices using its battery.
A new Pet Mode maintains climate control settings and locks interior buttons while owners are away – designed to keep pets comfortable and safe when left in the vehicle.
The interior emphasizes sustainable materials, incorporating recycled PET plastic in seating and BTX-free paint on door panels.
Manufacturing and Availability
European EV5s will be manufactured at Kia’s Autoland Gwangmyeong factory in South Korea, alongside the EV3, EV6 and EV9 models. This differs from international versions produced elsewhere.
Kia targets a late 2025 launch for the UK market but hasn’t confirmed specific pricing.
Industry analysts expect starting prices around £40,000-£45,000 to remain competitive with established rivals in the premium electric SUV segment.
