European charging network Fastned has opened two new ultra-rapid charging hubs in England’s North-East, bringing the company’s regional footprint to 13 locations.

The expansion adds 18 drive-through charging bays across both sites and strengthens Fastned’s presence in a region where it’s processed hundreds of thousands of charging sessions since entering the UK market.

Newcastle Airport Location Opens First

The first hub launched December 16 near Callerton Parkway Metro station – just one stop from Newcastle Airport. The location features 12 charging bays under full canopy coverage and marks Fastned’s first airport-adjacent site in the UK.

Six days later, the company opened its second hub on North Moor Road in Sunderland with six charging bays.

The Sunderland location includes new Costa Coffee and Greggs outlets, giving drivers food and drink options while their vehicles charge.

Both hubs offer charging speeds up to 300kW – fast enough to add significant range in minutes rather than hours for compatible EVs.

Fastned’s UK Growth Continues

Netherlands-based Fastned entered the UK market in 2019 with its first location on West Wear Street in Sunderland. The company now operates more than 30 sites across the country.

The North-East has become a key region for Fastned’s UK strategy, with 13 locations now serving the area’s growing EV driver base.

Councillor Martin Gannon, cabinet member for transport at the North East Combined Authority, welcomed the expansion:

“We are thrilled to welcome Fastned’s ultra-rapid charging hub to the North East. As more drivers look to transition to electric vehicles, it’s crucial that we have the infrastructure to support and encourage this.”

Gannon highlighted the strategic positioning near transport links: “This eye-catching and striking charging hub, located conveniently on a Metro line and near the airport, will allow more people to pull in, charge, and get back on the road.”

Strategic Airport Positioning

Tom Hurst, Fastned’s UK Country Director, emphasized the significance of the airport location:

“Our first airport location at Newcastle International Airport is an exciting milestone and with a new Sunderland hub too, this is a big step toward a future-ready UK charging network.”

The positioning targets both local commuters using the Metro system and travelers flying through Newcastle Airport – addressing two distinct but important EV charging markets.

Hurst noted the hubs serve multiple journey types: “Whether you’re heading to the airport, visiting family and friends, or heading further afield to explore seasonal events such as local markets, or simply going about your day, there’s now faster, greener charging options available.”

The North-East expansion reflects broader infrastructure development as the UK works toward its 2030 ban on new petrol and diesel car sales. Regional authorities have positioned the area as a center for green energy initiatives, with charging infrastructure playing a key supporting role.
