Fastned has submitted planning applications to create the UK’s first fully indoor ultra-rapid charging hub in Aberdeen, according to the Netherlands-based charging operator.
The company wants to convert the disused Grampian House warehouse on Virginian Street into a 12-bay charging facility with retail space, restrooms and a seating area.
The proposed development would feature drive-through chargers delivering up to 400kW of power – enough to add 100 miles of range in five minutes. Solar panels on the roof will generate renewable energy to help power the site.
Urban Charging Strategy
The Aberdeen project supports Fastned’s push to expand ultra-rapid charging into city centers. The company reports increasing demand from residents, businesses and visitors who want fast charging in central locations rather than highway services.
Fastned selected the Aberdeen site because it’s located just inside the city’s inner ring road and represents the company’s broader strategy to repurpose industrial buildings.
If Aberdeen City Council approves the plans, drivers will get the UK’s first fully covered charging hub – protecting them from Scotland’s unpredictable weather while they charge.
“Aberdeen is at the heart of Scotland’s energy transition,” said Tom Hurst, UK country director at Fastned. “This charging hub is perfect for the EV drivers of Aberdeen.”
Hurst expressed confidence that city officials will recognize how the development supports Aberdeen’s decarbonization goals.
“This hub isn’t just about EV charging, it’s about showing what’s possible in an urban environment while making a clear commitment to a cleaner, greener city,” he added.
Property Partnership
West Coast Estates owns Grampian House and is backing Fastned’s proposal to transform the empty warehouse.
The property company sees the project as an example of how underused buildings can become community assets that support sustainability goals.
“We are thrilled to be partnering with Fastned on this groundbreaking project to bring the UK’s first indoor drive-thru ultra-rapid EV charging hub to Aberdeen,” said Iftikar Mian, managing director at West Coast Estates.
Mian described the warehouse conversion as “responsible regeneration” that aligns with Aberdeen’s position in Scotland’s energy transition.
The planning application awaits review by Aberdeen City Council.
