Formula E officials are in discussions with Zandvoort about hosting a race starting in 2027, according to RacingNews365. The talks come as the Dutch circuit’s Formula 1 contract expires next year.
The timing aligns with Formula E’s expansion plans. When the 13th season starts in São Paulo this December, it’ll feature more races than any previous campaign.
The championship is also introducing its Gen4 car – a machine that produces 800 horsepower and hit 210 mph during private testing.
Circuit owners spotted at Berlin E-Prix
While nothing’s confirmed yet, Zandvoort’s ownership group was seen in the Formula E paddock during the Berlin E-Prix. This isn’t the Netherlands’ first attempt at securing an electric racing event – Eindhoven launched a failed bid in 2021.
Jeff Dodds, Formula E’s CEO, acknowledged the discussions when asked about Zandvoort’s potential.
“If you look at our target list of potential locations, I think next year is the last F1 race in Zandvoort. If you look at that circuit layout, obviously it’s a beach circuit, but it’s a big circuit. If I look at it, with a few modifications, I think [Zandvoort] could be a really interesting circuit for Formula E.”
He confirmed the circuit’s representatives had visited Berlin to understand Formula E’s requirements.
“In fact, the people who run and own that circuit, they were in Berlin, talking to us about how it works and what the potential looks like.”
Local support from De Vries
Nyck De Vries is backing the idea of bringing Formula E to his home country. The 2020/2021 Formula E champion with Mercedes currently drives for Mahindra Racing.
“I would welcome a Dutch race on the calendar very much,” De Vries said. “I think it would be great to actually race in the Netherlands.”
The four-time Formula E race winner finished eighth in the 2024/2025 standings with 92 points – just one point behind Jake Dennis in the Andretti Porsche.
Circuit modifications would be needed
Zandvoort would likely require changes to accommodate Formula E’s specific needs. The beachside circuit was modified extensively for F1’s return in 2021, including new banking at Turn 3 and updated facilities.
Formula E typically races on street circuits or modified permanent tracks that create closer racing than traditional F1 venues.
The championship’s interest in Zandvoort reflects its strategy to secure high-profile venues as it expands globally with the new Gen4 era beginning this season.
