Geely will launch the Starray EM-i Super Hybrid PHEV in the UK next month, starting at £29,990. The Chinese automaker’s entry into the competitive mid-size SUV market targets buyers considering the Toyota RAV4, Kia Sportage, and MG HS.

The Starray combines a 1.5-liter petrol engine with an electric motor to deliver 255bhp and up to 201mpg. More impressive is the claimed combined range of 618 miles – a figure that puts most conventional hybrids to shame.

Electric Range Beats Key Rivals

Geely offers two battery options for the Starray. The standard 18.4kWh pack provides up to 84 miles of electric-only driving, while the larger 29.8kWh battery maintains the same electric range but adds faster charging capabilities.

That 84-mile electric range significantly outperforms established rivals. Toyota’s RAV4 hybrid manages 62 miles on electricity alone. The Kia Sportage PHEV falls further behind at just 43 miles.

The automaker partnered with Lotus Engineering to tune the Starray’s chassis and suspension specifically for UK roads. That’s a notable collaboration – Geely owns Lotus and clearly wants to leverage that engineering expertise for mass-market vehicles.

“When we launched our brand in the UK, we committed to offering technologically focused, safe and intelligent mobility that is genuinely tailored to the needs of British drivers,” said Michael Yang, Geely UK’s general manager.

Yang emphasized the deliberate approach to UK market entry. The partnership with Lotus Engineering wasn’t just marketing speak – it represents genuine effort to adapt the vehicle for British driving conditions and preferences.

Three Trim Levels With Premium Tech

Geely structured the Starray lineup around three trim levels: Pro, Max, and Ultra. Even the base Pro model comes well-equipped for £29,990.

Standard features include:

  • 10-inch driver display
  • 15.4-inch central touchscreen
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Heated seats
  • Keyless go
  • Comprehensive driver assistance systems

The Max trim costs £32,690 and adds a head-up display plus wireless phone charging.

For £34,990, the Ultra model brings the larger 29.8kWh battery and faster charging speeds. That’s the version serious about maximizing electric driving and minimizing charging stops.

Yang highlighted the transparent pricing strategy. Rather than endless option lists, Geely chose three carefully configured trim levels to simplify the buying process.

The Starray represents Geely’s most serious attempt yet to establish itself in mainstream European markets. With competitive electric range, strong equipment levels, and Lotus-tuned dynamics, it’s positioning itself as a credible alternative to Japanese and Korean rivals.

Reservations open ahead of next month’s official launch.
