Honda is discontinuing sales of its e:Ny1 SUV in the UK, leaving the Japanese automaker without any pure-electric models in its lineup. The family SUV has been quietly removed from Honda’s online configurator as remaining inventory sells through.
A Honda spokesperson confirmed to EV Powered that the company won’t accept new orders for the e:Ny1 once current stock is depleted.
“Supply of in-stock models is very limited,” the spokesperson said, explaining why the vehicle disappeared from Honda’s retail website.
The e:Ny1 faced criticism from launch for its high price and underwhelming technical specs. Honda cut prices multiple times trying to compete with the Renault Scenic and Ford Explorer, but couldn’t gain traction in the crowded SUV segment.
New Direction for Honda EVs
The discontinuation leaves Honda without electric vehicles as ZEV Mandate requirements continue rising. But the brand plans to relaunch its EV efforts this summer with the Super-N – a completely different approach from previous models.
Unlike the e:Ny1 and earlier Honda e, the Super-N targets budget-conscious buyers. The compact hatchback will cost under £20,000 when it arrives in July.
Based on Japan’s N-One e, the Super-N features a 64-horsepower motor that briefly boosts to 95 horsepower. It includes a simulated seven-speed transmission, synthesized engine sounds, and chassis tuning designed for an “entertaining” driving experience.
Honda’s timing could prove advantageous – the Super-N will reach UK showrooms before competitors like the Renault Twingo, VW ID.1, and Kia EV1.
Broader EV Strategy Challenges
The e:Ny1’s end reflects Honda’s broader electric vehicle struggles. Earlier this year, the company scrapped its Series 0 project just months before launch.
That cancellation also ended the US-focused Afeela program Honda was developing with Sony, part of a $15.7 billion writedown of the company’s electric vehicle operations.
Honda’s shift toward affordable EVs represents a significant strategy change as the company attempts to rebuild its electric vehicle presence in an increasingly competitive market.
