Hyundai Motor Group expanded its Nürburgring testing facility to advance its N performance division’s electric vehicle development.

The upgraded center adds 834 square metres of new facilities — including specialized EV workshops, labs, and high-voltage infrastructure. Hyundai began testing at the iconic German track in 2011 before opening its dedicated facility there in 2013.

The expansion follows impressive EV performance testing results. The all-electric Ioniq 5 N recently lapped the Nordschleife just 2.7 seconds behind the BMW M2 CS. Engineers also spotted a camouflaged Ioniq 6 N testing at the circuit in late 2023.

“Our expanded facilities at the Nürburgring will allow us to integrate our N-performance with our EV strategy even more seamlessly, and affirm our commitment to electric high-performance vehicles, which have always been a crucial part of our DNA,” said Tyrone Johnson, managing director of the Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Center.

The company’s German presence continues growing. Hyundai plans to open its Square Campus at the Motor Europe Technical Centre in the Rhine-Main region in 2025.

This 25,000-square-metre facility will house the Group’s largest four-wheel noise, vibration and harshness dynos — testing equipment that simulates vehicle performance without on-road driving. Advanced chassis and powertrain dynos will also support development.

The center focuses on:

  • Electric vehicle advancement
  • Advanced driver-assistance systems
  • Infotainment technology
  • Electrification solutions

“Germany remains at the heart of automotive excellence. Our investment in this powerful ecosystem reflects our confidence in the Rhine-Main region’s engineering expertise and innovative strength,” Johnson said. “More than that, it proves our commitment to the passionate engineers and partners who make it all happen.”

The Hyundai Motor Group includes Kia, Genesis, and the Ioniq sub-brand. It also holds an 11% stake in Rimac, the hypercar manufacturer.
