Hyundai plans to unveil the Ioniq 2 EV at the 2025 Munich motor show in September, positioning the affordable crossover as a direct competitor to the upcoming Renault 4.
The new model will sit above Hyundai’s all-electric Inster city car and alongside the Kona Electric when it debuts next month.
Industry insiders suggest the Ioniq 2 could eventually replace the Kona Electric entirely.
Platform and Launch Timeline
Sales will begin in the third quarter of 2026. The Ioniq 2 uses the same scalable E-GMP platform as its sister car, the Kia EV2, which hits the market a few months earlier.
Hyundai Motor Group uses the E-GMP platform across all its EVs – including vehicles from Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis.
Battery Options and Performance
Both the Ioniq 2 and Kia EV2 will offer the same battery choices as the slightly larger Kia EV3.
The 58.3kWh battery delivers 267 miles of range on a single charge. The 81.4kWh battery extends that to 372 miles.
A single electric motor powers the front wheels with 201bhp and 209lb ft of torque – the same output expected in the Ioniq 2.
Design and Styling
Spy photos show the Ioniq 2 as a raised hatchback with a sloped, coupé-style roofline.
The front end mirrors the recently-updated Ioniq 6, featuring slim LED headlights and a tech-focused design.
Inside, the cabin will follow the current Ioniq family styling found in the Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, and Ioniq 9.
Market Position
The Ioniq 2 represents Hyundai’s first purpose-built, all-electric crossover.
Expected pricing starts around £25,000, placing it directly against the Renault 4, VW ID.2X, and Skoda Epiq in the affordable EV crossover segment.
