Jaecoo to launch compact electric SUV in UK this August
Jaecoo revealed its first all-electric model, the Jaecoo 5 BEV, at the Shanghai motor show. The compact electric SUV will arrive in UK showrooms this August, alongside the Omoda 7 hybrid from Jaecoo’s sister brand.
The new EV will join existing petrol and hybrid variants in the Jaecoo lineup.
With a promised range of around 250 miles, the Jaecoo 5 positions itself against rivals like the Ford Puma Gen-E, Jeep Avenger and Toyota Urban Cruiser. At 4.38m long, however, its physical dimensions more closely match longer-range competitors such as the Skoda Elroq and Kia EV3.
Technical specifications remain limited, with only the range figure confirmed so far. Industry experts believe the Jaecoo 5 will share its platform with the Omoda E5 SUV that launched in the UK last year. That would suggest a front-mounted 201bhp motor, 61.1kWh battery, and 80kW DC fast-charging capability.
The design follows the brand’s established styling direction, featuring an upright, boxy shape similar to the larger Jaecoo 7 SHS plug-in hybrid. Distinctive elements include a tall, vertically-slatted grille, slim LED headlights, and a sharp beltline below the windows. The rear styling bears a resemblance to the Range Rover Evoque.
Inside, Jaecoo has adopted a minimalist approach with almost no physical controls. The cabin is dominated by a large portrait touchscreen that curves up from the center console, complemented by a slim digital instrument panel set in a low dashboard. The seats appear to feature perforated leather or synthetic leather upholstery.
The company will announce full specifications, pricing and trim levels closer to the vehicle’s summer launch. To remain competitive in the increasingly crowded compact EV market, pricing is expected to start in the low-to-mid-£30,000 range.
