Joby Aviation and ANA Holdings are launching more than 100 electric air taxis in Japan, starting with Tokyo. The partnership will create a nationwide air mobility network using Joby’s electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft.

The expanded partnership between the US eVTOL manufacturer and Japan’s largest airline kicks off with public demonstration flights at EXPO 2025 Osaka from October 1-13. The flights will feature a Joby aircraft painted in ANA’s colors.

Koji Shibata, president and CEO of ANA HD, called the initiative “a pivotal step forward” in addressing Japan’s urban transport challenges.

“Air taxi service will enhance regional exchange and provide a new, efficient means of travel,” he said. “Demonstration flights at the Expo are the first step.”

JoeBen Bevirt, Joby’s founder and CEO, described Japan as “an extraordinary launchpad for redefining the future of air mobility.” He said the partnership aimed to “build new pathways in the skies and reimagine everyday life.”

How the Technology Works

Joby’s eVTOL aircraft takes off vertically like a helicopter but flies forward like a plane. The aircraft produces minimal noise and zero operating emissions.

The vehicle carries a pilot and four passengers at speeds up to 200 mph. It can cut journey times dramatically – reducing trips that take an hour by car to just minutes.

The technology also reduces congestion and air pollution in urban areas.

Infrastructure Development

The partnership extends beyond just aircraft deployment. Both companies are developing the infrastructure needed for commercial air taxi operations.

This includes:

  • Vertiports for takeoff and landing
  • Pilot training programs
  • Maintenance support facilities

Toyota Motor Corporation, an investor in Joby, is among the project’s key partners.

ANA HD and Joby are working with national and local governments plus private sector companies to speed up deployment. The long-term goal is a phased rollout of air taxi services across Japan in the coming years.

At EXPO 2025 in Osaka, Joby will perform piloted flights demonstrating vertical takeoff, transition to wingborne flight, and landing – giving the public its first look at Japan’s electric air taxi future.
