Kia Niro Recall: Airbag Issues Affect EV, PHEV, Hybrid Models

Kia Niro Recall: Airbag Issues Affect EV, PHEV, Hybrid Models image

Kia has announced a recall affecting 80,255 Niro vehicles due to a potential airbag deployment issue caused by faulty wiring placement.

The recall covers 2023-2025 Niro models — including hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and all-electric versions — specifically those with manual front passenger seat adjustments. According to the NHTSA, the problem stems from floor wiring that can become damaged when passengers repeatedly slide their seats forward and back.

This wiring issue creates several serious safety concerns. Damaged wires could prevent airbags and seatbelt pre-tensioners from working during a crash. They might also trigger unexpected airbag deployment or interfere with the system that’s supposed to deactivate the passenger airbag for children or smaller passengers. Drivers should watch for an illuminated airbag warning light on their dashboard — it’s often the first sign of trouble.

The current-generation Niro, which sees minor updates for 2025, maintains its position as Kia’s entry-level option across three powertrains. The hybrid version achieves 53 mpg combined, while the plug-in hybrid offers 33 miles of electric range. The all-electric model can travel 253 miles on a single charge.

Kia reports no crashes, injuries, or fatalities linked to this wiring problem, which they’ve traced to incorrect wire routing during assembly.

Dealers will inspect and fix the wiring free of charge — either rerouting or replacing it as needed. Kia plans to notify owners by mail starting March 14. Concerned owners can contact Kia’s customer service at 1-800-333-4542 or check their vehicle’s status at Kia’s recall website. The recall campaign is identified by reference number SC332.
