Kia has introduced its all-electric PV5 WAV (Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle) at the Financial Times’ Future of the Car Summit in London.
The PV5 WAV represents a collaboration between Kia and UK-based Motability Operations Ltd, a mobility scheme provider.
Built on Kia’s dedicated all-electric PBV (Platform Beyond Vehicle) modular architecture, this wheelchair-friendly version of the upcoming PV5 van addresses mobility challenges for wheelchair users and their support networks.
The vehicle features a side-entry system allowing wheelchair users to board safely from the pavement. It includes a quick-use wheelchair entry ramp rated for 300kg and a bespoke wheelchair belt-fastening system.
Additional accessibility features include a third-row tip seat that enables wheelchair passengers to receive assistance from the side.
Kia has maintained a decade-long commitment to improving accessibility. The company launched its ‘Green Trip’ project in South Korea to enhance mobility rights for people with disabilities, followed by a specialized ride-sharing service introduced in 2021.
“The Kia PV5 WAV is more than just a vehicle,” said Sangdae Kim, executive vice president and head of Kia’s PBV division. “By integrating cutting-edge Platform Beyond Vehicle technology with thoughtful design, we are paving the way for a future where everyone can enjoy the benefits of sustainable mobility, and our partnership with Motability Operations is a testament to our commitment to making this vision a reality.”
The company cites several factors driving the PV5 WAV’s development, including increasing life expectancies, growing elderly populations, and the gradual phase-out of internal combustion engines.
Kia announced its collaboration with Motability Operations earlier this year during Kia EV Day.
While pricing and arrival dates for the PV5 WAV remain unannounced, order books for the standard Kia PV5 Passenger and Cargo opened in early May 2025, with prices starting from £32,995. Deliveries are expected later this year.
