Land Rover will launch the all-electric Defender Sport by the end of 2026, marking the brand’s first compact electric SUV built on parent company JLR’s new EMA platform.
Recent spy photos show a prototype testing in near-production form under heavy camouflage.
The Defender Sport keeps the upright, boxy design that defines the Defender family. But it’s got some updates – a slimmer LED light bar up front and a smaller version of the Range Rover’s bumper design.
Off-road tires, flared wheel arches, and blacked-out wheels give the compact SUV its rugged appearance. The lower bumpers match this treatment.
Electric Platform and Range
The Defender Sport will be the first vehicle to use JLR’s electric-only EMA architecture. It’ll offer battery options between 70kWh and 90kWh, delivering an estimated range of 300 to 320 miles.
The next-generation Range Rover Velar is expected to follow with the same platform.
By mounting the battery pack flat on the floor, engineers can maximize interior space. The cabin layout will mirror the full-sized Defender but with larger display screens and JLR’s new user interface.
This updated infotainment system will debut in the Defender Sport before rolling out to other Land Rover models.
Interior and Seating
The Defender Sport will offer two-row seating as standard. There’s a possibility of a sixth seat positioned between the driver and front passenger – an unusual configuration for the segment.
The electric powertrain should deliver the same off-road capability as the brand’s internal combustion models. Instant torque delivery and a lower center of gravity from the battery placement could actually improve performance on challenging terrain.
Four-wheel drive will be standard across the lineup.
Pricing and Competition
When it arrives in early 2027, the Defender Sport is expected to start between £40,000 and £50,000.
That puts it against a wide range of competitors:
- High-spec Skoda Enyaq models
- Upcoming Subaru E-Outback
- BMW iX3
- Volvo EX60
- Mercedes GLC electric variants
The Defender Sport represents Land Rover’s push into the growing compact electric SUV market while maintaining the brand’s traditional off-road focus.
