Lexus has confirmed its iconic LFA supercar will return as a fully electric vehicle, building on parent company Toyota’s newly announced V8-driven GR GT platform.

The luxury brand rejected suggestions that any future LFA should keep its petrol engine. Company officials stressed that “the model name LFA is not bound by internal combustion engines.”

The electric LFA will share its lightweight, high-strength aluminum body frame with Toyota’s performance EV. Both cars use the same foundation – but Lexus is positioning its version as the premium option.

Design and Technology

The new LFA measures 4.7 meters long and two meters wide.

It’ll use the same software-controlled, steer-by-wire system found in Lexus’s RZ SUV. That means no mechanical connection between the steering wheel and front wheels – everything happens electronically.

The LFA will also carry over the RZ’s controversial yoke-style steering wheel instead of a traditional round wheel.

Lexus said the electric LFA centers on three key elements: low center of gravity, lightweight construction with high rigidity, and aerodynamic performance.

The company promised its answer to cars like the Aston Martin DB12 and Bentley Continental GT will create a “sense of unity between car and driver.”

Powertrain and Launch Timeline

Technical details remain unconfirmed. No word yet on motor output, battery size, or range figures.

Launch timing is also unclear. However, Toyota has said it plans to debut solid-state battery technology in a performance EV within a couple of years.

The LFA could be the car to introduce this next-generation battery tech. Solid-state batteries promise faster charging, longer range, and better performance than current lithium-ion packs.

Toyota’s EV Strategy

The electric LFA signals Toyota’s full commitment to EVs after initial hesitation about battery-powered vehicles.

Toyota’s current EV lineup includes the Urban Cruiser and bZ4X. Next year brings the Tesla Model Y-competing CH-R+, bZ4X Tourer wagon, and an electric version of the Hilux pickup truck.

Lexus is following a similar path. Beyond the RZ and upcoming LFA, the brand’s next-generation ES sedan will offer an electric-only drivetrain when it launches in 2026.

At this year’s Tokyo Motor Show, Lexus revealed its LF-ZC and LF-ZL concept cars. These hint at a future electric sedan and range-topping luxury SUV.

The original LFA, produced from 2010 to 2012, featured a naturally aspirated V10 engine and became one of the most sought-after supercars of its era.
