Lexus RZ Adds Steer-by-Wire & Manual Transmission for 2025

Lexus will introduce its steer-by-wire system on the RZ SUV this year as part of several updates to its first EV.

The all-electric RZ will receive a sportier range-topping model featuring a simulated manual transmission, along with a larger battery and faster charging capabilities.

Lexus initially announced plans for the steer-by-wire system when the RZ launched in 2023. The technology’s refinement took longer than anticipated, with the company now confirming it will debut on the updated RZ later this year.

The system eliminates the physical connection between steering wheel and front axle, using electronics to transmit steering inputs. With a lock-to-lock range of just 200 degrees, the speed-sensitive system adjusts steering ratio based on driving conditions — providing agility at higher speeds and easier maneuverability when parking.

Instead of a conventional steering wheel, the system uses a two-winged yoke that Lexus claims improves road visibility and increases knee room.

Steer-by-wire with the yoke will be optional on higher trim levels and standard on the new RZ550e F Sport.

This flagship model employs the most powerful of three available motor configurations, delivering 402bhp through a two-motor, all-wheel-drive system called Direct4. While performance figures remain unannounced, a sub-five-second 0-62mph time seems likely.

The F Sport features specially tuned dampers and springs, plus aerodynamic enhancements including redesigned bumpers and a two-segment rear spoiler to improve airflow.

The RZ550e F Sport introduces Interactive Manual Drive — Lexus’s answer to Hyundai’s e-Shift. This system simulates an eight-speed paddle-shift transmission using the regenerative braking paddles. It combines artificial engine sounds, torque management, and a simulated “rev limiter” to create a more engaging driving experience.

Lower in the lineup, all RZ models benefit from upgraded motors and batteries for improved power and range. The front-wheel-drive model gets renamed from RZ300 to RZ350e with a 20bhp increase to 221bhp. The mid-tier RZ500 now offers 376bhp from its dual motors — 67bhp more than the previous RZ450e.

All versions receive a new 77kWh battery that adds up to 60 miles of range, pushing total range beyond 300 miles in the most efficient configuration.

Battery pre-conditioning helps reduce charging times while water cooling supports high-power performance.

The updated Lexus RZ range will arrive in the UK in early 2026

The updated Lexus RZ will reach UK showrooms in the first quarter of 2026 and will be among three Lexus EVs launched before year-end.

While details about the other models remain confidential, Lexus executives have confirmed one will be an all-new electric version of an existing core model.
