Local Residents Help Hackney Council Find EV Charging Locations

Hackney Council has launched a resident survey to determine locations for new electric vehicle charge points across the borough. The initiative supports drivers making the switch from petrol and diesel vehicles to electric.

Hackney Light and Power, the council’s energy service, will use feedback from the online survey to position charge points on lampposts and in parking bays while maintaining pedestrian access.

The borough currently operates 1,200 charge points throughout Hackney.

Survey responses will help the East London council reach its target of 3,000 chargers by 2030. The expansion would create one of the UK’s largest concentrations of EV charging infrastructure.

Leading London’s Charging Network

Hackney already ranks as London’s best area for EV charging. The borough offers 464 chargers per 100,000 residents – the city’s highest density coverage.

Zest operates Hackney’s charging network as the primary Charge Point Operator. The company provides charging speeds from 7kW to 300kW depending on location requirements.

Local EV permit holders can access reduced charging rates through Hackney Light and Power. Standard charging costs 59p per kWh across the network.

Residents can also choose a monthly subscription option. The £16.25 monthly fee (excluding VAT) provides unlimited charging access.

Resident Input Shapes Network Growth

Sarah Young, Hackney’s Cabinet Member for Climate Change, Environment and Transport, emphasized community involvement in the expansion plans.

“The shift to electric vehicles is creating a cleaner, quieter and more sustainable Hackney. As we support people in this transition to less polluting cars, we’re ensuring that charging infrastructure is fair, accessible and shaped by residents’ requests.”

Young highlighted the survey’s importance in network development.

“That’s why we’re inviting everyone to have their say on where we install the next round of charge points. Soon, we’ll have among the densest charging networks in the country. This is your chance to help us decide exactly where these chargers are located.”

The council plans to maintain pedestrian-friendly installations while expanding coverage across the borough. Hackney’s approach balances infrastructure growth with community accessibility needs.
