Lotus confirmed it’s launching a plug-in hybrid version of its Eletre SUV later this year – marking a retreat from the company’s all-electric strategy.
The new Eletre PHEV debuted in China today with 939 horsepower and claims of more than 200 miles of electric-only range. That’s 47 horsepower more than the current all-electric Eletre R.
Power Shift After Poor Sales
The Geely-owned brand had planned to go fully electric by 2028. But disappointing sales of the Eletre and Emeya sedan forced Lotus to retrofit a combustion engine to its flagship SUV.
The decision represents a significant strategy change for the British marque.
Following its Chinese launch, the Eletre PHEV will reach European markets this summer. A hybrid version of the Emeya sedan will likely follow – both models share the same platform.
Hybrid Powertrain Details
The all-wheel-drive system combines a 2.0-liter turbocharged gas engine with two electric motors. Despite the extra power, the PHEV’s 0-62 mph time hits 3.3 seconds – nearly half a second slower than the electric Eletre R due to additional weight.
The hybrid features a massive 70kWh battery – larger than many full EVs currently on sale.
Lotus claims 220 miles of electric-only range, though that figure uses China’s more lenient testing standards. Combined range reaches 880 miles with both power sources.
The battery supports ultra-rapid charging from 30% to 80% in just eight minutes. Lotus hasn’t revealed specific power ratings for what it calls the “6C” battery pack.
Market Positioning
In China, the model carries the name “For Me” – though that branding won’t likely transfer to Europe, where it’ll probably keep the Eletre name.
By adding combustion assistance, Lotus appears to be targeting traditional high-performance SUVs like the Aston Martin DBX, Lamborghini Urus and Ferrari Purosangue.
The company hasn’t announced pricing for the Eletre PHEV. Expect it to land in the same range as current electric versions, which run from £86,000 to £140,000.
The hybrid’s arrival this summer will test whether Lotus can reverse sluggish sales with a more familiar powertrain approach.
