Lucas di Grassi announced he’ll retire from professional racing after the 2025/26 Formula E season. The Brazilian has been with the series since its first race in 2014.
The 41-year-old became the first driver to sign with Formula E when it launched. He won the championship’s inaugural race in Beijing and helped develop the original car design.
Di Grassi’s career numbers include 13 wins, 41 podiums, and the 2016/17 drivers’ title. That championship battle with Renault e.dams’ Sébastien Buemi remains one of the closest in series history.
“After a lifetime dedicated to racing, 2026 will mark my final season as a professional racing driver and the beginning of a new chapter,” di Grassi said.
The São Paulo native credited motorsport with shaping his entire life – from his early days in Brazil’s suburbs to his current base in Monaco.
“Racing shaped my life in ways I could never have imagined. It changed me profoundly as a driver, person, father, and human being.”
Formula E leadership responded quickly with tributes.
Co-founder and chairman Alejandro Agag called di Grassi “part of the Formula E family” rather than just a driver. He highlighted the Brazilian’s role in shaping the championship from its earliest days.
“His passion for electric racing has been invaluable to the series. While we will miss seeing him behind the wheel, his legacy as a World Champion and passion for innovation in sustainability lives on in Formula E.”
CEO Jeff Dodds suggested di Grassi’s involvement with Formula E won’t end when he stops racing.
“He hasn’t just raced, he has believed in the mission of electric mobility from day one. While the end of this season will be a farewell from an incredible chapter behind the wheel, we fully expect to see Lucas remain closely involved in the championship going forward.”
Di Grassi hinted at upcoming announcements about his post-racing plans. He promised to “share more news with you soon about the bright future ahead.”
The veteran driver emphasized his commitment to finishing strong. He wants his final season driven “with the same intensity, commitment, and love that brought me here.”
Di Grassi’s 1,077 championship points span more than a decade of Formula E competition. His four pole positions and consistent podium finishes helped establish the series’ credibility during its early years.
The 2025/26 season will mark the end of an era for Formula E’s most recognizable figure.
