Mazda CX-80 PHEV Review

Mazda’s new CX-80 marks the brand’s first venture into the seven-seat SUV market, offering a plug-in hybrid powertrain alongside traditional engine options.

The CX-80 stretches 5 meters long and 1.9 meters wide, making it Mazda’s biggest UK model. It shares design elements with its smaller sibling, the CX-60, featuring Mazda’s signature understated styling and a prominent front grille.

Inside, the CX-80’s width is immediately noticeable. The cabin offers generous space for front and second-row passengers, though the third row is best suited for children. Two six-seat configurations are available — one with a walk-through design and another with a center console.

Powertrain and Performance

The plug-in hybrid system combines a 2.5-liter petrol engine with a 129kW electric motor, producing 323bhp. The 17.8kWh battery delivers:

  • 38 miles of electric-only range
  • 0-62mph in 6.8 seconds
  • Official efficiency rating of 176mpg

Real-world testing achieved 45.7mpg in mixed driving conditions. The CX-80 can tow up to 2,500kg — matching EV competitors like the Kia EV9 and Volvo EX90.

Technology and Features

All models include:

  • 12.3-inch infotainment system
  • Head-up display
  • Leather upholstery
  • Heated front seats and steering wheel
  • Wireless phone mirroring
  • LED headlights

Pricing and Trim Levels

The CX-80 starts at £49,670 for the Exclusive-line grade, reaching £56,420 for the Takumi Plus trim. This positions it alongside the Hyundai Santa Fe but above the Peugeot 5008 PHEV and Skoda Kodiaq.

Higher trims add 20-inch wheels (up from 18-inch), heated rear seats, privacy glass, and a 360-degree parking camera. Six-seat configurations cost approximately £750 extra on Homura and Takumi trims.

The CX-80 represents Mazda’s measured approach to electrification, offering hybrid technology while the brand develops its full EV lineup — planned for 2028-2030.
