Mercedes has confirmed its upcoming fifth-generation A-Class will return as both an EV and hybrid hatchback when it arrives in 2028.
The A-Class faced discontinuation last year. But as Mercedes works to regain ground in the electric vehicle market, a new model based on the 492-mile CLA’s Multi Modular Architecture will debut as part of the brand’s EV expansion.
Platform and Battery Options
The MMA platform supports both electric-only and internal combustion powertrains on the same production line. By switching to the 800V MMA system, the A-Class EV gets a longer wheelbase and wider tracks for improved interior space.
Electric models will offer front- or rear-wheel-drive configurations. Two battery choices are available – a 58kWh Lithium Iron Phosphate unit or an 85kWh Nickel Manganese Cobalt pack.
Range details for the electric A-Class remain limited. Entry-level A-Class EV models will start with a single-motor, 221bhp powertrain, according to reports. Range-topping non-AMG cars will get a twin-motor, 348bhp setup.
Performance-focused AMG-badged models are expected to produce up to 500bhp.
Design and Practicality Changes
Unlike Audi’s one-box design approach with the upcoming A2 EV, the electric A-Class will develop the current fourth-generation car’s hatchback bodystyle. The visuals were signed off by now-departed design chief Gorden Wagener at the end of January.
To help conceal the higher ride height of the EV, Mercedes will increase ground clearance across all future A-Class models. The Stuttgart brand insists it won’t become a crossover.
The Mercedes A-Class EV addresses customer demand for improved ease of access, better outward visibility, and elevated ride height.
Up front, the A-Class EV will feature a sharknose front end like the new CLA and GLC. No confirmation yet on whether it’ll adopt both cars’ illuminated front grille. The A-Class won’t get the CLA’s frameless doors.
Around back, a regular tailgate and angled rear window remains. Inside, it seats up to five passengers.
Mercedes is considering giving the A-Class EV a new three-letter name to align with the electric CLA, GLB, and GLA naming strategy. Like the CLA and GLA, the A-Class will be built at Mercedes’ Kecskemet, Hungary factory alongside the next-generation electric C-Class.
