Mercedes-Benz CLA has claimed the European Car of the Year title for 2026, according to judges at the Brussels Motor Show. The all-electric sedan from Stuttgart beat six other finalists to secure the prestigious award.

The victory marks only Mercedes’ second win in the competition’s history. The last Mercedes to claim the title was the 450 SE/SEL back in 1974 – a gap of 52 years.

A panel of 59 judges from 23 countries selected Mercedes’ entry-level EV ahead of strong competition. The shortlist included the Škoda Elroq, Kia EV4, Citroën C5 Aircross, Fiat Grande Panda, Dacia Bigster and Renault 4.

Clear Victory Margin

The CLA secured 320 points in the final tally, putting it well ahead of the second-place Elroq on 220 points. Twenty-two judges ranked it as their top choice overall.

Mercedes positioned the CLA as their new entry-level electric vehicle, but it brings serious technical credentials. The sedan offers a range of 492 miles and charging speeds up to 320kW thanks to its 800V architecture.

The automaker said the award represents the first major highlight in celebrating Mercedes’ 140th anniversary this year.

“The new CLA was named Car of the Year 2026 – a proud moment for Mercedes‑Benz,” said Mercedes chairman Ola Källenius. “Jurors from across Europe have confirmed what our customers have been telling us: the CLA is a game-changer, delivering outstanding efficiency and effortless intelligence.”

Expanding Lineup

Mercedes initially launched the CLA as a two-wheel-drive sedan. The lineup has since expanded to include the CLA Shooting Brake estate and additional powertrain options.

A 348bhp all-wheel-drive variant now tops the range.

The CLA went on sale across Europe and the UK last year. First UK customer deliveries are expected within the coming weeks, while US sales will begin in the coming months.

This marks the fifth consecutive year an electric vehicle has won European Car of the Year. The Renault 5, Renault Scenic, Jeep Avenger and Kia EV6 claimed the title in previous years.

The award reflects Europe’s continued shift toward electrification – with five of the seven finalists this year being pure EVs.
