Mercedes-Benz released the first images of its upcoming VLE electric van after the vehicle completed a demanding 1,090-kilometer test drive from Stuttgart to Rome.
The journey covered 677 miles in 13 hours with just two 15-minute charging stops.
The VLE represents Mercedes’ first electric vehicle built on its new VAN.EA platform. This modular architecture will underpin the German automaker’s entire next-generation electric van lineup, allowing clearer separation between passenger and commercial variants.
Eight-Seat Family Hauler
Mercedes plans to launch the VLE next year as a dedicated eight-seat people carrier. The company positions it as a Grand Limousine replacement for the current EQV.
Target customers include families, leisure travelers, and corporate VIP transport services.
The VLE will share its underpinnings with the more luxurious VLS variant. Mercedes previewed the VLS earlier this year with its Vision V concept, promising airline-style seating and immersive entertainment systems for ultra-luxury private transport.
Both vehicles will join additional variants on the VAN.EA platform – including a Marco Polo camper version.
Real-World Testing Conditions
The Stuttgart-to-Rome test route deliberately challenged the VLE’s capabilities across varied terrain and conditions. Engineers drove through winding Alpine passes, high-speed highways, and dense urban areas.
Temperatures ranged from 11 to 33 degrees Celsius during the journey. The van’s climate control maintained a steady 22 degrees throughout.
Mercedes engineers drove in what they described as “normal” fashion to reflect everyday efficiency rather than maximizing range.
The test concluded in Rome’s city center, where engineers evaluated the platform’s rear-wheel-steering system. This feature aims to improve maneuverability for the large van in tight urban spaces.
Impressive Charging Performance
While Mercedes hasn’t released official specifications, the test results suggest strong real-world capabilities. Completing 677 miles with only two 15-minute stops indicates a range between 250-300 miles per charge.
The brief charging sessions also point to charging power of at least 320kW on the new 800V platform.
“Our future MPVs have once again impressively demonstrated their suitability for everyday use on the long-distance route,” said Dr. Andreas Zygan, head of development at Mercedes-Benz Vans. “With just two short charging stops from Stuttgart to the Alps to Rome – the Mercedes‑Benz VLE demonstrates impressive efficiency of the new Van Electric Architecture.”
The VLE’s performance positions Mercedes to compete directly with other premium electric vans entering the market. The combination of long range, fast charging, and luxury appointments could appeal to both commercial operators and affluent families seeking electric alternatives to traditional large SUVs.
