Mercedes-Benz unveiled its new luxury people carrier, the Mercedes VLE, positioning it as a premium alternative to the VW ID Buzz with what the company calls the “best of two worlds.”

The VLE builds on Mercedes’ VAN.EA electric platform and aims to “combine limousine-like ride and handling with MPV-style versatility,” according to the German automaker.

Mercedes plans multiple variants – from family models supporting active lifestyles to luxury limousines featuring aircraft-style seating and entertainment systems.

“The all-new electric VLE marks the next significant milestone in our successful 140-year automotive history,” said Mercedes chairman Ola Källenius. “Shaped by our pioneering spirit, it redefines the notion of space and comfort, and adds a game-changing level of versatility and innovation.”

Size and Seating Configuration

At 5.3 meters long, the VLE significantly exceeds even seven-seat ID Buzz versions and accommodates up to eight passengers.

The innovative “Roll & Go” system equips seats with integrated wheels. Owners can manually position seats anywhere within the cabin or remove and store them entirely. Higher-spec models include powered seats adjustable via smartphone app or the vehicle’s infotainment system.

The most luxurious VLE variant features “Grand Comfort” rear seats with pillows, calf and lumbar support, massage functions, and integrated wireless phone charging.

These seats pair with the “MBUX Rear Space Experience” – a retractable 31.3-inch 8K display with an eight-megapixel camera for films, gaming, or video conferences.

Technology and Displays

Front passengers get a triple-display “Superscreen” incorporating a 10.25-inch driver display, 14-inch central touchscreen, and 14-inch passenger screen supporting video streaming and gaming.

Mercedes emphasizes comfort as central to the VLE experience. Adaptive air suspension delivers car-like ride quality while four-wheel steering provides car-like handling and maneuverability.

The VLE’s van origins remain visually apparent, but Mercedes created clear links to its other EVs through body kits for a sportier appearance and a light-up grille similar to the GLC and CLA.

Aerodynamic work gives the VLE the same drag coefficient as the current EQE SUV – contributing to its range capabilities.

Powertrain and Performance

The all-electric powertrain packs a 115kWh battery and 268bhp motor.

The VLE covers up to 435 miles on a single charge thanks to its massive battery capacity.

Its 800V architecture enables rapid charging – adding 220 miles in just 15 minutes.

An all-wheel-drive model with more than 400bhp will join the VLE range later, along with entry-level versions featuring a smaller 80kWh battery.

UK pricing and specifications will be confirmed closer to the VLE’s launch later this year. Don’t expect bargain pricing – this luxury van will likely carry a six-figure price tag.
