MG has launched the 4X crossover in China, marking the company’s first vehicle equipped with semi-solid state battery technology. The electric crossover targets competitors including the BYD Atto 2 and Kia EV3.

Built on the platform of the electric-only MG4 Urban hatchback, the 4X measures 4.4 metres long, 1.8m wide, and 1.6m tall. Those dimensions place it squarely in the compact crossover segment.

The standout feature is the vehicle’s semi-solid state battery – a technology that’s generating significant industry attention.

According to MG, all 4X models will use this battery technology. Semi-solid state batteries combine solid and liquid-gel electrolytes instead of using only liquid ones – improving energy density and performance in extreme weather.

Battery Technology Breakthrough

The technology promises faster charging times and increased range compared to conventional lithium-ion batteries. In February 2026, Donut Lab demonstrated 0-80% charging in under five minutes using semi-solid state technology.

Mercedes achieved 749 miles on a single charge last September using an experimental solid-state battery in an EQS.

The MG 4X’s 53.95kWh semi-solid state battery delivers 317 miles of range on China’s CLTC testing cycle. That cycle typically produces higher range estimates than European WLTP testing.

Tech Partnership and Interior

MG is collaborating with Chinese smartphone manufacturer Oppo to develop the 4X’s interior technology systems. The companies plan a full reveal within the coming months.

The crossover represents MG’s push into next-generation battery technology as manufacturers race to improve charging speeds and range.

UK Availability Uncertain

MG hasn’t confirmed whether the 4X will reach UK markets. If it arrives, the model would become the seventh electric vehicle in MG’s lineup – joining the MG4, MG4 Urban, MG S5, MG S6, and the premium IM5 and IM6 models.

The company is also developing the MG2 – an electric B-segment hatchback targeting the Renault 5 and Citroën e-C3.

Expected to arrive in approximately 18 months, the MG2 should cost around £18,000. That price point matches expectations for the upcoming Renault Twingo and Volkswagen ID.1.

The 4X launch signals MG’s commitment to advanced battery technology as the EV market becomes increasingly competitive. Semi-solid state batteries could provide a significant advantage if the technology proves reliable in real-world conditions.
