MG confirmed it’s launching the MG4 Urban next month as the brand expands its electric vehicle lineup. The new supermini goes on sale in February and will compete directly with the Renault 5, Citroen E-C3, and BYD Dolphin Surf.
Despite carrying the MG4 name, the Urban is built on a completely different platform. It’ll sit beneath the updated MG4 – which also arrives in February – rather than replacing the current model.
MG described the newcomer as a “new B-segment MG hatchback designed specifically as an electric vehicle for towns and cities.” The company said it’s “built on a new platform to enhance efficiency and range” and will expand the MG4 lineup.
Technical Specifications
MG hasn’t confirmed technical details for the European market yet. However, the car appears to be a European version of the all-new MG4 released in China last year.
EuroNCAP crash test images show what looks like an identical model to the 2025 Chinese car going through various safety tests.
The sizing creates some confusion though. MG calls the Urban a city-ready B-segment car, but the Chinese model measures 4.4m long – that’s 40cm bigger than the Renault 5 and 10cm longer than the current MG4.
Chinese specifications position it beneath the European MG4 in terms of performance. In China, the MG4 Urban uses a 161bhp front-mounted motor rather than the MG4’s rear-mounted 168bhp unit.
It also gets a 42.8kWh battery offering up to 272 miles of range on China’s CLTC test cycle. The current MG4 already offers more power, bigger batteries, and longer range – all expected to increase further with the 2026 update.
Pricing and Market Position
Given its positioning beneath the MG4 and expected rivals, the Urban will likely cost from around £25,000 when it arrives in February.
The MG4 Urban was one of two new EVs MG hinted at when it revealed its product strategy in late 2025.
Alongside the Urban, MG confirmed another brand-new model will arrive later this year. That car will be positioned between the MG4 and the MG5 SUV in the lineup.
