MGS5 Launches April: 300-Mile Range at £28,500 image

MG has confirmed the MGS5 EV will go on sale in the UK next month, with European sales following later this year.

The all-new electric SUV effectively replaces the MG ZS SUV, positioning itself as a mid-to-compact competitor against the Skoda Elroq, Kia EV3 and Mini Aceman. Prices start at under £29,000.

Built on MG’s MSP EV platform, the MGS5 shares its running gear with the MG4 hatchback. All versions come equipped with the 228bhp motor driving the rear wheels.

Top-spec models deliver a 0-62mph time of 6.3 seconds.

At launch, buyers can choose between two battery options – a standard range 49kWh and a long range 64kWh. The SE Long Range with the 64kWh battery offers a maximum range of 298 miles.

The smaller battery charges at up to 120kW, while the larger unit supports 139kW charging for a 10-80% charge in 28 minutes.

MG says the MGS5’s interior addresses customer complaints about the MG4

Drawing design inspiration from the Cyberster, the new MGS5 shares a smooth front-end look with the recently revealed 2025 MG4. It has abandoned some of the more challenging elements of the MG4’s design for a cleaner, more modern appearance.

At 4.47m long, it matches the Skoda Elroq in size. MG claims it offers “generous” space for four adults, along with a 453-litre boot.

Improvements over the MG4 include upgraded cabin plastics and fabrics, plus a new 12.8-inch infotainment system with an updated operating system.

The brand has responded to customer feedback by adding physical buttons for audio and climate controls. It also includes a personalization function to manage and save preferred ADAS system settings.

The MGS5 launches with three trim levels – the SE spec in standard or long range variant, plus the flagship Trophy Long Range. The SE models cost £28,495 and £30,995 respectively, while the Trophy is priced at £33,495.

This pricing makes it almost as affordable as the entry-level variants of most rivals.

MG hasn’t indicated whether an extended range model using the MG4’s 74kWh battery will join the lineup later.

Orders for the MGS5 open in the UK in April, and later in the spring across the rest of Europe.
