Mini and Deus Ex Machina have unveiled a surf-inspired concept based on the John Cooper Works Electric hatchback.
The collaboration produces two one-off vehicles that blend automotive performance with surf culture aesthetics.
The Skeg Concept
The Skeg features a striking brushed silver and hi-viz yellow finish. The design incorporates an illuminated front end and semi-transparent fiberglass panels.
These modifications reduce the standard JCW Electric’s 1,700-kilogram weight while improving aerodynamics.
Flared wheel arches dominate both front and rear sections. Air-flow holes at the bottom of the front bumper channel airflow around the vehicle.
The rear spoiler responds to airflow patterns similar to how a surfboard rides wave contours.
Mini’s designers describe the aesthetic as “raw, handcrafted” – celebrating what they call the “beauty of imperfection.”
Interior Modifications
The cabin receives extensive modifications to match the surf theme.
Bucket seats get neoprene finishes that mirror wetsuit materials. Custom trays replace the rear seating area to accommodate wet suits and surf gear.
Door inserts have been hollowed out to reduce weight further.
The stripped-back interior emphasizes function over traditional luxury appointments.
Companion Vehicle
Deus Ex Machina also created the Machina – an internal combustion version of the Mini JCW.
Both vehicles feature oversized ‘X’ graphics on their roofs. The marking serves as a visual connection between Mini and Deus Ex Machina’s partnership.
The design language remains consistent across both electric and gasoline variants.
Executive Response
Mini chief Stefan Richmann praised the collaboration’s results.
“Thanks to our collaboration with Deus Ex Machina, we are taking this philosophy to a new level and setting exciting new trends for fans and motorsport enthusiasts. The partners are united by their ‘passion for machines, innovation and creativity’ and an authentic relationship with their own community.”
The partnership connects Mini’s performance heritage with Deus Ex Machina’s lifestyle brand positioning.
Technical Specifications
The Skeg retains the standard JCW Electric’s mechanical components.
The 54.2kWh battery pack delivers 251 miles of range on a single charge. Power output remains unchanged at 255 horsepower.
Weight reductions from the fiberglass panels and interior modifications may improve efficiency slightly, though official figures weren’t provided.
The electric drivetrain maintains the JCW’s performance characteristics despite the aesthetic overhaul.
Unfortunately, both the Skeg and Machina will remain unique prototypes. Mini describes them as “rolling expressions of a lifestyle where a love of speed meets creativity and considered design.”
The concepts demonstrate potential directions for future Mini customization programs, though no production plans have been announced.
