Mitsubishi Motors confirmed it’s bringing back the Outlander plug-in hybrid SUV as part of its return to the UK market after five years away. The announcement comes from International Motors Ltd, the import group handling Mitsubishi’s comeback.

The original Outlander PHEV broke new ground as one of the first mainstream plug-in hybrids to really catch on with buyers. It remained popular right up until Mitsubishi left the UK in 2021.

Sharon Townsend, head of Mitsubishi Motors in the UK, said the company’s excited to bring back two familiar names – though with major upgrades.

“We are excited to announce the two new Mitsubishi models that will go on sale in the UK in summer 2026. While the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV and the Mitsubishi L200 are familiar, much-loved, and respected names in the UK, we will be introducing the very latest models, which feature significant design, technology, and performance upgrades over their predecessors.”

The L200 pickup truck will launch alongside the Outlander. There’s no confirmation yet on whether the Eclipse Cross electric SUV will join the lineup.

Bigger and More Powerful

The second-generation Outlander PHEV represents a complete redesign from the ground up. It’s grown in every dimension:

  • 2.5cm longer
  • 6.2cm wider
  • 3.8cm taller

For the first time in the UK, buyers can get a seven-seater configuration.

The 2026 model combines a 2.4-liter petrol engine with two electric motors – one driving each axle. Mitsubishi claims the system produces more than 300bhp and delivers over 500 miles of total range.

The company hasn’t revealed battery capacity or electric-only range yet.

The all-wheel-drive setup builds on Mitsubishi’s Super-All Wheel Control system, which the brand describes as “rally-bred.” It offers multiple drive modes for different terrain and weather conditions.

Tougher Competition Ahead

Pricing details aren’t available yet, but the new Outlander faces a much different marketplace than its predecessor.

Back then, plug-in hybrid SUVs were rare. Now established brands like Volkswagen, Toyota and Citroën offer strong PHEV options. Chinese manufacturers have also entered the space with models like the Jaecoo 7 SHS and BYD Seal U DMi, often at lower price points.

The summer 2026 launch gives Mitsubishi time to establish its dealer network and prepare for what’s shaping up to be a competitive return to the UK market.
